This article discusses 28mm scale Crusader Knights miniatures. There are infantry knights. There are infantry sergeants in green. There are cavalry knights on horseback. And of course there is the Pope, who directed these people to invade the Holy Land. Fireforge Games.
The infantry knights and sergeants are from Fireforge Games, and are injection molded in polystyrene plastic. The Pope and the Teutonic cavalry knights are from Piano Wargames in 3D printed resin. The two cavalry knights with the red crosses are Templar knights from Victrix Miniatures Medieval Knights set also in polystyrene.
Crossbows are in the back row. Spears are in the middle, and infantry knights all around. On the flanks are several cavalry knight.
The manufacturer Fireforge Games suggest these figures for use with their Deus Vult miniature wargames rules. However they will work with any skirmish or mass battle game.
These figures are from the Teutonic Infantry set. There are also sets for Teutonic Knights, Templar Infantry, Templar Knights, and various Crusader sets. As you can see from the web site, many of these sets have similar body poses and weapons. They differ mostly in the various heads and helmets. I opted to go with the Teutonic knights because "cool helmets"!
These mini sculptures have quite animated body poses. The arm options allow you to select the various weapons. And the head options allow all sorts of helmets and facial expressions. I love the pot/bucket style helmets here.
In keeping with the green surcoats, I opted to put all sergeants on earth brown and green grass type bases. The basing is done in my usual style: glue plastic miniature to a ferrous washer, spackle the base to hide the plastic puddle stand, sprinkle some rock bits and static grass, and then glue down some grass clumps.
These figures are the same bodies as the previous crossbow soldiers, but they have the optional arms to hold spears and shields. The shield designs are from various web sites, scaled down and printed, and glued to the shields.
The banner is made from a scavenged web site image, scaled down, and printed. Ordinary PVA white glue fixes it to the spear pole.
These knights are once again the same bodies, except using the fanciest arms and helmet options. These figures also have chest emblems that I printed on decal paper and made a slide transfer to the chest.
The figures are painted in my usual minis style. I used Armypainter Speed Paint "Ashen Grey" to do the white surcoats. The speed paints looked a little too contrasty, so I did a dry brush of white to hide away some of the dark crevasses. The metallics and other knightly accessories are all painted with Vallejo Model Paint acrylics.
For the knights I used snowy white bases. For the first time I put some Armypainter gray green grass clumps poking up through the snow
All the minis have a final coating of Krylon Matte Finish (1311). This protects the mini paint job and also acts a final glue layer on the basing materials.
These are the fanciest helmets and weapons. Those crazy helmets are what most people envision when they think of Teutonic Knights. Many of these helmets are inspired from the 1938 film "Alexander Nevsky" by Sergei Eisenstein. These giant bucket heads look so bulky that I would think they would be impossible to fight with effectively.
Once again, nice dynamic body poses in this set. The other special option here are the capes. The are only two types of sprues in the box and this sprue has four cape options. It is hard to see because of the photo angles, but one cape has a wolf skin draped over it. Very cool!
These figures are not from the Fireforge Deus Vult Teutonic Infantry set, but rather, the center five figures are from Piano Wargames made in 3D printed resin. The two figures on the flanks with red crosses are are Templar knights from Victrix Miniatures Medieval Knights set. I describe this set on my article on Dark Ages Normans from August of 2024.
That Pope miniature is quite a nice sculpt.
The Teutonic Knights from Piano Wargames are nice poses. They are two piece models (rider and mount) with no options.
The Victrix Knight are similar to the Fireforge Teutonic Infantry with arm and shield and head options.
I hope you enjoyed seeing the photographs and descriptions of my Crusader Knights. These knights from various manufacturers and sets all look nice together. Thanks for visiting my site and browsing this article.
